KKIS – Keeping kids in school

Real estate in Playa del Carmen - KKIS

Keeping kids in school @ Playa del Carmen

This month I met with Gayle and Janet from KKIS, an organization here in Playa del Carmen dedicated to providing school supplies to underprivileged students.  Janet and Gayle are fellow expats from the US that visited Mexico on vacation, fell in love with the area and the people, and purchased real estate in Playa del Carmen. Living here full and part-time, they decided to give back to the community that they have become a part of over the years.

KKIS started in 2011 and supports local schools by providing supplies and teaching English. This year KKIS collected supplies for 650 students. An auction (live, silent and online) is held every spring to help raise money for the organization and this year there are three local golf tournaments that will be giving a portion or all of their proceeds to KKIS.

Aside from monetary donations, KKIS appreciates donations of school supplies and always welcomes volunteers; twice a week they spend an hour at the DIF school in Playa del Carmen, helping students learn English. I spent an hour of my day helping out the kids and I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I had – it was a great help with my Spanish as well as extremely rewarding, I can’t wait to go back!

If you are unable to volunteer your time during your stay, but maybe have some extra room in your suitcase, think about picking up some of the supplies that KKIS is in need of and bringing them with you when you come down. If you’ve found real estate in Playa del Carmen, volunteering and supporting great causes like this is an incredibly rewarding way to give back to the community that you have decided to become a part of.
