Schools in Playa del Carmen

School in Playa del Carmen

If you’ve purchased real estate in Playa del Carmen or other parts of the Riviera Maya, have school age kids and are looking to relocate your family year round, you’ll want to find a school for your kids to attend during your time here in Playa del Carmen. If your kids aren’t bilingual yet, it’s important to find a school that offers studies in both English and Spanish and also an accredited school (SEP) so their studies will be able to transfer back to the US or Canada if you decide to move back.

As the new year rapidly approaches and you consider what you need to do to relocate your family to Playa del Carmen, here are some schools in the area that offer bilingual studies and some great extracurricular activities. All schools are SEP accredited.

Ak Lu’um International School

An ecofriendly campus surrounded by lush jungle vegetation, this school is less than 4 miles south of Playa del Carmen. It is a preschool and elementary school that teaches in both English and Spanish and by 1st grade introduces a third language to the curriculum.

Colegio Inglés

This school is located in Playa del Carmen, preschool through high school and there are many great extracurricular activities offered like dance, theater, music, sports and more. An after school program is available for preschool and elementary students for an additional monthly fee, a great option for working parents.

Comunidad Educativo El Papalote

For preschool through high school, this school has a great community feel and is recommended by expats in the area. The school is in the center of city, located on 25th Avenue between 30th and 32nd street.

International School of Playa del Carmen

A new school opened just this year, ISP is located at El Arbol community center in Playacar Phase II. Offering SEP accredited classes for Kindergarten through 4th grade and distance education from 5th to 12th grade, ISP follows the SEP curriculum as well as the Common Core Curriculum that is used in the US.

During your search, contact the schools you are interested in via email or set up an appointment if you are in Playa del Carmen to learn more about the campus and the staff. The schools I mentioned above are all private schools; there will be registration and book fees, uniforms and monthly tuition. Most schools offer a discount for early registration and for having multiple kids enrolled.

Finding a great school will help make the transition from their home country to Playa del Carmen, smooth for your children. And giving them this experience of living in a foreign country and learning a second language will help them grow into amazingly well rounded (and bilingual) young adults.
