Time change in Quintana Roo

Time change in the Riviera Maya

In December 2014 it was agreed upon by the Congress in Mexico to create a new time zone for Quintana Roo, moving the clocks ahead one hour. Originally this was scheduled to take place at the time of daylight savings but this date has been moved up and effective February 1st at 2:00 am, Quintana Roo will set it’s clocks ahead one hour.  After this change, Quintana Roo will no longer observe Daylight savings, clocks will remain the same all year round. In the winter months the state will be in the Eastern Time Zone and in the summer, the Central Time Zone.

Areas in the Riviera Maya that will change their clocks include Isla Mujeres, Lázaro Cárdenas (Holbox) Benito Juarez (Cancun and Puerto Morelos), Cozumel, Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras) and Tulum (includes Akumal). Certain municipalities in Quintana Roo have decided to remain on the current time schedule, including José María Morelos, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Othon P. Blanco.

The benefits for the change include more beach time for tourists and those living in the Riviera Maya – during the winter there will be one more hour of daylight, in the summer, two more hours. The extra hour of sun is also expected to lower power usage, saving the hotels and those who own real estate in the Riviera Maya money on their electricity bills.

The time change is also expected to increase airline connectivity to the USA and Canada – putting the Cancun International Airport and Quintana Roo in the same time zone as 8 Canadian airports and 22 airports in the US.

Whether vacationing or living here full time, remember to set your clocks ahead on February 1st and enjoy the extra hour of sun!
