Yoga in Playa del Carmen

Yoga in Playa del Carmen

Since moving to Playa del Carmen, I found my favorite form of exercise to be yoga. It’s really popular in this area and I’ve fallen in love with the practice. It’s a great stress reliever, a way to center myself, calm my mind and my anxieties. I always walk away from yoga feeling refreshed.

There are three studios that I’ve practiced at, all a little bit different as far as location and classes, but each offers a spiritual practice in a beautiful shala.

Studio #1

Casa Ananda

Address:  34th St. near the corner of 75th Ave, Playa del Carmen

Located across the Federal highway 307, this studio is off the beaten path but easy to find. During the week Casa Ananda offers a variety of different classes and on Saturdays, they have two free classes (donation only) one for beginners at 8:45 and one for the more advanced at 8:30. After class on Saturday, Casa Ananda has a buffet style breakfast catered in from El Sangha Rito (more on that later), that they charge $60 pesos for. It’s a nice way to end your class and to meet new people.

Studio #2

Palapa Suuk

Address: Ave CTM #777 between 5th & 10th Ave, PDC

Palapa Suuk is smaller than Casa Ananda but still has a great mix of classes and is located just a couple blocks off the beach and near 5th Ave. When you are done with your class, go downstairs for breakfast/lunch/dinner at El Sangha Rito, located right next door. I recommend their fresh juices, a great way to rehydrate after yoga. The food there is really good; plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options made with fresh ingredients and reasonably priced.

Studio #3

Inti Centro Holistico

Address: The beach! Between 4th & 6th St.

Inti is a is a renovated night club, located just a few yards off the beach, with a HUGE handpainted mural outside of the goddess Dankini. My favorite part about Inti is that you can hear the waves and feel the cool ocean breeze while you practice.  After yoga at Inti you can get a massage on the beach for only $20 USD.

Classes at these studios are mostly in Spanish but please tell your instructor that you need help in English. All three studios are on Facebook, give them a “like” to become part of the PDC yoga community and to find out more about the special events and classes they each offer. It’s a guaranteed way to meet good people in PDC.
